Specifiers selecting materials for the construction of the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, chose copper for both its domestic cold water and hot water plumbing systems.

Copper-nickel Fittings - Conventional wisdom in a contemporary format
A correctly designed and installed copper-nickel piping system can give years of good service, providing excellent resistance to sea water corrosion and biofouling as natural properties inherent to copper. When seeking information on copper-nickel fittings and connections, it used to be difficult obtaining an engineering overview of available types from one single source. This is no longer the case.

Copper could help prevent the spread of flu infections
Copper could help prevent the spread of flu infections. Recent research at the University of Southampton shows that the Influenza A virus is virtually eradicated within six hours on copper surfaces. Influenza A viruses cause seasonal infections, resulting in around 12,000 deaths a year in the UK1, and include the avian flu strain.

At yesterday’s 'Designing Against Cross Infection' seminar, organised by Architects for Health, Copper Development Association Director, Angela Vessey, addressed an aspect of material selection by highlighting copper’s antimicrobial properties and the suitability of copper and its alloys for hospital touch surfaces.

Antimicrobial Copper Interest Group Launched
Two eminent professors opened the first meeting of the Antimicrobial Copper Interest Group, hosted by Copper Development Association in Birmingham last week. Professor Keevil, University of Southampton, presented the results of his International Copper Association sponsored research on inactivation of E. coli and MRSA by copper and brass surfaces in a matter of hours. He was joined by Professor Reed of Northumbria University who reported on his field work in India where the antimicrobial property of copper and brass show potential for decontaminating drinking water in rural communities.

Copper touch surfaces in healthcare facilities - naturally antimicrobial
Research demonstrates rapid antimicrobial activity of copper against MRSA with 99.9% inactivation in 90 minutes.  Studies have clearly demonstrated such an antimicrobial effect on a range of microbes including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), E. coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes and other hospital-acquired infections.

Brass..... helps Securon set the Gold Standard in Safety Belts
Seat belts use a number of different and widely varying materials e.g. webbing, metals, plastics etc. and make use of an equally large number of manufacturing processes including injection moulding, cold pressing, hot seal cutting and sewing, many of which are carried out within the company. Reducing the growth and spread of legionnella
According to a new study copper pipes reduce the growth and spread of the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires' Disease.  Legionella concentration in water conveyed by copper pipes was found to be 90 per cent less than in cross-linked polyethylene pipes, one of the most commonly used types of plastic piping in plumbing.

The European Union can save 200 billion kWh or electricity each year by improving the efficiency of electric motors and motor driven systems used in industry, according to a new study published by the European Copper Institute at this week's United Nations Convention on Climate Change in Milan.
