| This
project forms part of a major refurbishment of the1950's teaching and research buildings,
essentially completely re-making laboratories within the existing envelope. Dramatic
changes in working requirements over the last 50 years necessitated a substantial
expansion of air handling equipment and plant. To maintain laboratory space, these were
placed on the building's exterior behind fritted glass and perforated metal screens.
Pre-patinated copper clad flue stacks provide the dominant external architectural element,
reflecting use of the material on the original buildings. Pre-formed panels and louvres in
copper were also used on the new Boiler Room.
