| Closely
packed into a 12.5m plot width, these three mews houses reflect the scale of nearby
terraced houses whilst exploring new solutions to the building type. Each has a
garage/gymnasium and a bedroom on the ground floor. Main living areas are on the
first floor in an open plan arrangement running the full building length, incorporating
double height spaces past the gallery floor above. Barrel-vaulted roofs, clad in
pre-patinated copper to reflect the green roofs on old public buildings in the area, cut
back to form a west-facing terrace. Copper is then used for various other external
elements including cladding and window shutter for the large window to the side lane
elevation. The architect judges chose the project for its clarity of form, confident response to the challenges of the site and further development of the mews house type. While copper is a natural choice for roof forms such as barrel vaults, the judges were particularly impressed with its wider use for sliding shutters, sun awning fascias, wall cladding and services access doors, as part of a restrained palette of external materials. The spatial and natural lighting qualities of living areas was also recognised, bearing in mind the narrowness of each house, together with individual touches such as the grand piano room which differentiates the corner house.
