BATTERSEA PARK BOAT HOUSE

Architect: McAllister Co

Contractor: Boss Metals

Main Contractor: Wiggins Lee

Main Contractor: Wandsworth Borough Council

The brief for this lakeside building called for a robust, well-proportioned and timeless design, suited to its picturesque setting and linked to the new boardwalk.  The galvanised steel and wrought timber strcture visually floats on the lake and is clad in long strip copper without transverse joints.  A rolled copper ridge forms the intersection between the roof planes and rainwater falls directly from the roof into the lake.

This is a simple, restrained building which has to accommodate a diversity of functions.  The clarity of structure and conciseness of the copper detailing justified this award.  The judges also recognised the restrained palette of natural unfinished materials as being wholly appropriate to the lakeside setting.
