THE JOHN SMITH AWARD FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP -
HIGHLY COMMENDED
AWARDS 9

THE NICHOLSON INSTITUTE, LEEK

Copper Contractor: Norman & Underwood

Architect: Staffordshire County Council & Donald Insall Associates

Main Contractor: Sandy & Co (Contractors)

Owner: Staffordshire Couny Council

The copper roof surmounting the cupola of this William Morris inspired building also needed replacement due to failures generated by its detailed design as if a lead roof.  The new roof is an exact replica but incorporating detailing modifications to prevent further failures.

The award recognises this as a beautifully executed eample of copper in roofing.  The traditional skills used complement the architect's research into resolving the problems posed and care with the design of detailing.
