THE JOHN SMITH AWARD FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP - COMMENDED
AWARDS 9

St CUTHBERT WITH St MATTHIAS, LONDON

Copper Contractor: Marshott Non-Ferrous Roofing

Architect: Caroe & Partners

Main Contractor: Killby & Gayford

Owner: The PCC of St Cuthbert with St Matthias

The predominant feature of this late 19th century Grade II listed church is the soaring, richly oranmented copper-clad fleche.   Damage during the Second World War and in subsequent storms has necessitated extensive renovation.

The judges were impressed by the level of research, resulting in a faithful reproduction of the original installation, and in particular the craftsmanship shown in the execution of gargoyles, fleurs de lys, and other intricate details.
