CONTEMPORARY COPPER CURVE

A barrel-vaulted roof clad in pre-patinated copper has been used to create a 'tardis' effect for an unashamedly contemporary house within a Dorset conservation area.

christchurch.jpg (20503 bytes)Despite a narrow frontage, design of this 2 bedroom property - by DUA Architecture LLP - maximises its southerly aspect.  It has a barrel shaped roof inspired by recycled railway carriages, of which there are a number in the area.  This appears deceptively low from the outside but the high curved roof, extending to 3.6m, combined with large areas of glass and open planning provide a very spacious, tardis-like feel to the dwelling.  This is a property built to a high specification, for low maintenance and easy living.  The roof, guttering and rainwater pipes are all pre-patinated copper, which gives straightaway the distinctive green patina of older copper roofs.

Partner in charge David Underhill said: 'We looked at various roofing materials, mostly grey coloured metals.  However, when presented with a sample of pre-patinated copper, both we and the local authority Conservation Officer had no doubts that this was the right material to use.  The result looks great.  It is particularly pleasing to see the sharply detailed but soft-coloured copper against other roofs in the area such as thatch and wester red cedal shingles."
