Throughout, the alloy groups are referred to by International Standards Organisation designations and are listed within each section in order of increasing aluminium content. The prefix 'G-' has been used with the cast alloys to distinguish them from their wrought counterparts.
For British Standard (BS) and Director General, Ships (DGS) alloys, these designations are as follows:

Where the available information indicates that a particular composition conforms to the requirements of one of the above standard alloys, a footnote has been included to that effect to enable users to quickly find the information most relevant to the commonly used British alloys. It should be noted, however, that the impurity levels or mechanical properties of the specimens concerned may not fall within the requirements of the relevant standards, and that the alloys marked as having a composition conforming to a standard do not necessarily conform in all respects. Further, the thermal history and/or casting techniques associated with the test pieces are not always either known or appropriate for the alloys concerned.
For these reasons, the data presented should be interpreted with caution.
