Copper Close to the Edge
|
The first phase of the major
redevelopment of the former Duke of York Barracks in Chelsea has just opened. The jewel in
the crown of this important project is a central pavilion with distinctive copper roofs
carefully detailed and executed with particularly slim edge profiles. The central retail building is defined by continuous clear glazing to all sides, surmounted by three stepping levels of shallow pitched copper roofing. Detailed design around concealed gutters and subtle changes in roof pitch give each roof a visual lift, followed by wider sheets with double lock welts forming a skirt to give an extremely fine overhanging edge. Bespoke copper louvres manufactured from 1.5 and 2mm thick copper are used between upper and lower roof levels. Copper proved to be an ideal choice of material to give continuity throughout the different elements and to enable the fine detailing fundamental to the design philosophy. The redevelopment was master-planned by Paul Davis and Partners for client Cadogan Estates with detailed design of the pavilion by London Bloc Ltd Architects. The pavilion roofs were Highly Commended in the 2002 Copper in Architecture Awards. |
